MOUNT VERNON, Ga. — A 20-year-old college student-athlete was shot and killed while attending an off-campus party in Georgia.

News outlets report Stevenson Derival, of Decatur, was fatally hit when gunshots rang out at a party early Sunday in Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon Police Chief Calvin Burns says at least 200 people were at the party and fled when gunfire rang out, which could make finding the shooter difficult.

Derival attended Towers High in DeKalb County and was on the wrestling and track and field teams at Brewton-Parker College, a private Christian college around 165 miles (266 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta.

College President Steve Echols said in a statement on Facebook that the community is “shocked and broken-hearted.” A GoFundMe account has raised more than $800 of its $8,000 goal.

Agencies will continue to investigate.
