CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — A North Carolina man has been accused of siphoning money from his mom and not paying her nursing home bills in Iowa.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that 45-year-old William Leedom, of Hickory, North Carolina, is charged with theft. He didn’t immediately return a call Wednesday from The Associated Press. Court records say he’s been denied a public defender and is acting as his own attorney.

His next hearing in Black Hawk County is scheduled for Oct. 3.

Court records say Leedom held a power of attorney for his mother and was in charge of paying her bills at Pinnacle Care Nursing Home in Cedar Falls and other expenses. Officials for the home told police in April that her unpaid bills there amounted to about $95,000.
