SALT LAKE CITY — Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is declining to answer reports that he’s considering running for the Senate in Utah next year if longtime Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch retires.

Romney was asked about a possible Senate run during an interview about the Olympics with the Deseret News ( but the former Massachusetts governor only said, “I’ve got nothing for you on that topic.”

Hatch, who has been in office since 1977, has said he hasn’t decided if he’ll seek another term in 2018 but has said he may step aside if Romney ran.

Hatch and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have spoken with Romney about the idea but Romney has kept quiet about it.

The 70-year-old now lives in Utah, where he led a turnaround of the scandal-plagued 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
