Bloomington Speedway raising funds in Columbus boy’s memory

BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington Speedway will dedicate its Friday race to childhood cancer awareness in memory of the late 5-year-old Peyton Hazeltine Whittington, whose mother — Lynn Whittington of Columbus — started the Indiana Chapter of the Cure Starts Now in his memory.

Peyton’s Angels driver Jason Setser of Columbus will drive The Cure Starts Now Indiana car. Setser has donated his winnings to the Peyton’s Angels Indiana Chapter for research of Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas (DIPG) and has raised more than $5,000 in honor of Peyton Whittington.

Gates at the track, 5185 S. Fairfax Road, open at 5:30 p.m. Friday and admission is $30 for a pit pass and $15 for general admission. Children age 12 and younger are admitted free with an adult admission.

Raffle items, a 50/50 raffle and other fundraising events are planned.

Peyton Whittington was born in Bloomington and his mother said this is the first fundraising event in his hometown.

“Our goal is to not only raise as much awareness to childhood cancer, but to raise the funds to beat childhood cancer,” she said. “We are honored that the Bloomington Speedway is allowing us to use their track as a platform for a cause that has made a deep impact on so many people.”
