APPLE VALLEY, Calif. — A Southern California man has shot and wounded his 2-year-old daughter while cleaning his gun.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials say the accidental shooting was reported Wednesday at a home in Apple Valley, northeast of Los Angeles.

Authorities say the man told them he was cleaning his gun downstairs when it went off. The bullet went through the ceiling and struck the sleeping girl in the stomach.

KABC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2fveRAQ ) the girl underwent surgery and is in stable condition.

The man wasn’t arrested but the case will be turned over to the district attorney’s office, which will determine whether any criminal charges should be filed.
