PORTAGE, Ind. — Police say a stretch of interstate in northwestern Indiana has reopened after being shut down when a truck hauling hazardous materials caught fire.

No injuries were reported in the early Thursday fire near Portage, but Indiana State Police say businesses at an industrial center near the fire were notified and evacuated if needed. Police say the fire was quickly contained and people were allowed back into the affected area.

Police say the truck was hauling a corrosive material from East Hartford, Connecticut to Bensenville, Illinois. Investigators say the truck’s brakes may have caused the fire.

Police say both directions of Interstate 94, which is combined with I-80 in the area, were closed as crews responded. Eastbound traffic resumed Thursday morning and the westbound lanes reopened later in the morning.
