SHELBY, N.C. — Authorities in North Carolina say a 1-year-old girl was killed when she was thrown from a moving pickup truck her grandmother was driving.

Shelby police told local media outlets that the child was secured in a car seat in the back seat of a Chevy Silverado on Wednesday. A police report said the grandmother made a right turn and the driver’s side door flew open, throwing the child from the truck.

The child was taken to a local hospital, then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she died. No identities have been released.

Police called it “a freak accident,” but an investigation into the accident is continuing.
