Wildlife refuge planning youth deer hunt event

Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge in Madison will conducting a special youth deer hunt Nov. 3 and 4.

A total of 150 youths ages 17 and younger will be selected by lottery on Monday, and each youth will be notified by mail thereafter.

Youths selected can attend an optional deer hunting luncheon/workshop on Nov. 3, hosted by the Indiana Deer Hunter Association and Big Oaks Conservation Society, and a firearm deer hunt on Nov. 4.

Hunt areas can be reserved by youths on Nov. 3 during the workshop. Each youth must have a responsible adult as a guide and the youth will be the only one allowed to hunt. The youth and guide must attend a refuge safety briefing, and the youth’s acknowledgement of danger form must also be signed by a responsible adult.

Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge will follow state regulations with regard to hunter safety requirements for youths.
