The city of Columbus sought permission to take on $2 million in debt, about $1 million more than normal, for the construction of Mill Race Center and the maintenance goals and projects of the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department.

Confident of victory in Indiana, Vice President Dan Quayle spoke to a crowd of about 1,000 people near the Farm Progress Show site in Columbus about ethanol consumption, a Bill Clinton presidency, affordable health care and capital gains taxes.

Purdue University sophomore and former Bull Dog standout Mike Phipps put his hometown of Columbus on the map after he steered Purdue to a 28-21 triumph against mighty Notre Dame, the nation’s No. 1 team.
