KINGMAN, Ariz. — Authorities say an inmate at the Mohave County Jail has been accused of aggravated assault on a detention officer.

County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an assault at the jail Tuesday afternoon.

They say 34-year-old Matthew Palmer of Lake Havasu City allegedly hit the detention officer along the side of his head.

The officer told sheriff’s officials that Palmer charged at him and he had to defend himself before other detention officers were able to restrain the inmate.

The officer was taken to a Kingman hospital for injuries that included a fractured right hand.

His name hasn’t been released.

Authorities say Palmer wasn’t injured.
