TUCSON, Ariz. — Police have identified a man suspected in a crime spree that ended when he was shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Tucson.

The suspect is 24-year-old Elijah Jamal Lawrence. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputy who shot him is Sgt. Kevin Kubitskey, who is on standard administrative leave. Kubitskey is an 18-year veteran of the department.

Authorities said they were called to an area near Interstate 10 about 2 p.m. Wednesday about an armed robbery and carjacking.

The suspect then ditched the car and stole another one.

Police say Lawrence was waiving a gun around before shots were fired. He’s in critical condition at a local hospital.
