CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Authorities say a West Virginia mother shot her two children, killing one, before fatally shooting herself.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said 39-year-old Leah Cart shot her 5-year-old daughter Olivia and her 7-year-old son Jonah on Friday at their home in Culloden.

The girl died. Zerkle said her brother was listed in critical but grave condition after surgery at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Zerkle said Leah Cart killed herself after shooting her children.

The sheriff said the children’s father discovered the scene at the family’s home, and he called 911.

Zerkle said “there’s no history of anything in that home that would’ve indicated an event like this would take place.”

The shooting is under investigation.
