Hope man recovering after tractor accident

A Hope man was listed in stable condition Monday after being injured when his tractor overturned and rolled down an embankment in rural Bartholomew County.

Walter Gill, 43, of 14510 N. County Road 300E, Hope, was taken by LifeLine helicopter to Indiana University Methodist Hospital, after members of the Clifford Fire Department lifted him from a steep embankment near Sidney Branch, police and fire officials said.

The fire department responded to a call at 3:47 p.m. Saturday at Gill’s address north of St. Louis Crossing, Clifford Fire Chief Charlie Moore said.

The property owner was doing chores when his tractor rolled down the embankment toward the river, pinning him underneath, Moore said.

Gill appeared to sustain chest and head injuries, although he was conscious and able to free himself from beneath the tractor, the chief said.

Gill was talking to first-responders at the scene on Saturday before the medical helicopter arrived, said Judy Jackson, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.
