ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A jury has awarded more than $200,000 to three New Jersey homeowners who jurors found were unconstitutionally prosecuted after their 2012 arrests.
Homeowners Melanie Shaw, Anthony Florio and Timothy McGuarn will each receive $70,000 from a civil suit stemming from their 2012 arrests after they chased teenagers who broke into a home they were renovating. Attorneys for city officials did not return calls for comment.
The three were arrested in 2012 after Florio tried to scare off three teenagers with a non-functional rifle from World War II.
The jury unanimously found the arresting officers did not falsely arrest any of the three residents. But the jury found seven-to-one that the defendants had unconstitutionally prosecuted the plaintiffs.
