BARTON, Vt. — Police in Vermont are investigating a fire that destroyed a historic barn.

The Caledonian-Record reports multiple fire departments responded to a fire at The Pines barn in Barton around noon Monday. State police closed U.S. Route 5 as firefighters worked to tame the flames.

Firefighters could not save the barn as it burned to the ground. Crews did prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

The Pines barn had been used as a dairy barn before it was used for auctions by Northeast Kingdom Sales Inc. It was later sold by the company.

According to Vermont State Police Detective Sergeant Michael LaCourse, the cause of the fire is undetermined. Investigators say they want to hear from anyone who witnessed the fire.
