Delbert Wittenborn

RUSHVILLE

Lloyd Delbert Wittenborn, 90, of Rushville, passed away on October 12, 2017. He was born on June 18, 1927, in Chester, Illinois, to the late John and Agnes (Douglas) Wittenborn.

Del interrupted his high school education to enlist in the Navy during WWII. He served until the end of the war and then returned to complete his education at Chester High School. Del married Gail Ruth Hunt Wittenborn on June 7, 1947, and she preceded him in death on May 1, 2011.

He began his work career at P.N. Hirsh & Co in Chester, IL, and moved up through the ranks. Del and Gail moved to Rushville with P.N. Hirsch & Co in 1954 when he was named the store manager and then moved back to Illinois in 1959. He and Gail returned to Rushville in 1964 when he became district manager. He retired in 1984. Del had many fond memories from his days of managing stores across Illinois and Indiana. Del also worked for Central Hardware for a few years.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of the Rushville Elks Lodge #1307 and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Del would admit to being a mediocre golfer although he did manage to get 2 hole-in-ones on the same hole a week apart at the age of 84. He was inducted into High School’s athletic hall of fame for his talents in Football and Track & Field. He still holds a record in the State of Illinois for the longest touchdown run.

Del is survived by his loving children, Nancy (Robert) Woodruff, John (Sandy) Wittenborn, Jan (Mac) McNulty and Lee Ann (Richard) Vaughan; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother, John Donald (Mitzi) Wittenborn. Del was preceded in death by brothers, Kent & Milton.

Services will be held privately with burial in Rushville’s East Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church or the Rush County Community Foundation.

Arrangements are entrusted to Moster Mortuary.
