Kiwanis fundraiser collects more than $66,000; proceeds to benefit youth organizations

It was all about being a lucky duck at the 14th Annual Kiwanis Incredible Duck Splash.

First place winner Linda Keefer, Circleville, Ohio, was the big winner in the Saturday event at Mill Race Park, whose adopted duck was plucked from the Round Lake in Mill Race Park for the first place prize of a $2,500 travel gift certificate from The Travel Authority.

One lucky duck had 10 chances to win a new car from Chevrolet of Columbus or $50,000. Unfortunately, Lucky Duck selectee Sandra Kimiewicz, Columbus, did not have her duck selected among the first 10 and was awarded a $100 consolation prize.

Kiwanis representatives said $16,920 in ducks were adopted by contestants through local Kiwanis members and other locations and then dropped into the lake at noon Saturday, including some dropped by helicopter, courtesy of Columbus Helicopter and pilot Jim Ogilvie.

The helicopter made several trips over the lake to drop bags full of ducks into the water, much to the delight of kids who sat on the concrete shelf that surrounds the lake to watch the ducks splash into the water.

Free events included a bounce house, health checks, Indy Admirals Remote control boats and photo opportunities with “Star Wars” characters.

The Kiwanis organization announced that $66,345 was raised in the event, which will be distributed to benefit local youth organizations in the community.
