East graduate named player, freshman of week

Cortney VanLiew has been named not only the Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Week for the third time, she has earned her first ASUN Player of the Week honor.

The Columbus East graduate led Florida Gulf Coast to straight-set wins against Florida International, Jacksonville and North Florida last week. She recorded 34 kills, 33 digs and eight blocks in the three matches.

VanLiew tallied 12 kills and 13 digs in Friday’s win against Jacksonville that moved the Eagles into a tie for first place in the conference.

Volleyball club hosting tryouts, training sessions

The East Columbus Volleyball Club will conduct open tryouts for girls in the 15-16-year-old age group from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 30 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 5 at Ceraland.

The tryout fee is $35. Teams will be announced within three days of the final session.

East Columbus Volleyball Club also is hosting open fall training sessions on Tuesdays through Nov. 21 at Ceraland. Grades 4 to 6 are from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m., and Grades 7 and 8 are from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per session.
