GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Authorities have accused a North Carolina man of beating his girlfriend twice in one day.

Maj. Richard Lewis of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office told local media outlets that the man assaulted his girlfriend as he drove down the road near Eureka on Oct. 8, then assaulted her again on the side of the road after the car stopped near her home.

Lewis said the woman fled the car and made it back to her home. He said her relatives called 911.

The sheriff’s office said 36-year-old Joshua McCoy Powell of Snow Hill was arrested Wednesday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He’s in the Wayne County jail under a $50,000 secure bond. It’s not known if he has an attorney.
