Bands fall short of expectations in weekend competitions

The high school marching bands from Columbus North and Columbus East were left thinking about what could have been after their performances in competitions over the weekend.

The Sound of North Marching Band from Columbus North narrowly missed a chance to compete in Saturday’s finals of The Bands of America Indianapolis Super Regional, while the competitive season ended for Olympian Spirit Marching Band of Columbus East.

Sound of North competed at 3:45 p.m. Friday in the preliminary round of the super regional. The marching band missed finishing in the top 14 and qualifying for Saturday’s finals by .35 points, said North marching band director Keith Burton. North finished 17th overall and fourth in Class 3A, and earned a Division I rating.

Burton said it was disappointing not to finish better, but he was happy the band performed as well as it did considering additions were made to North’s show in the last week-and-a-half that required a lot of learning.

Sound of North’s next performance is Saturday in the Indiana State School Music Association semistate competition at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. A berth in the Nov. 4 state finals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis is on the line.

The Olympian Spirit Marching Band of Columbus East competed in the Indiana State School Music Association Scholastic Class A finals marching band competition at 8:32 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Central High School. Unfortunately, a problem in the middle of the band’s performance cost them dearly. East finished 14th out of 17 bands in Class A.

The band suffered a “musical tear,” East band director David Rodgers said, as the continuity between several parts of the band became disrupted.

“We had worked on it all week. It’s just one of those things, a momentary glitch,” Rodgers said.

On the line were invitations for the champions from Scholastic Class A and B to perform in exhibition at the ISSMA marching band finals Nov. 4 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
