JERSEY CITY, N.J. — More than two dozen people rallied over the weekend for victims of domestic violence, including a woman who police say was fatally stabbed by her husband a few days prior.

The Jersey Journal reports the candlelight vigil for victims of domestic violence was held Saturday in Jersey City.

Police found 38-year-old Milagros Rodriguez De Morel fatally wounded in a hallway when they responded to the Duncan Avenue building around early Wednesday. The woman’s husband, 59-year-old Jose Morel, has been charged with murder and pleaded not guilty.

Police say five women have been killed in domestic violence incidents this year alone in Jersey City.

October is domestic violence awareness month. A panel discussion with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office on the topic is scheduled for later this month.
