Mary S. Meredith

MORGANTOWN

Mrs. Mary S. (Chupp) Meredith passed away Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis at the age of 70.

By her side was her devoted husband and loving sons. She was a resident of Morgantown and a former resident of Columbus.

Mary was born in Franklin to Robert F. and Alberta B. (Terrell) Chupp on June 6, 1947.

She was a 1965 graduate of Franklin Community High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science from Franklin College in 1969 and a master’s degree in education from Indiana University in 1971. While in college, she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority and the Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society.

Mary was the executive director for Human Services Inc. in Columbus for 19 years, retiring in 2002. During that time, she was also the director of Head Start schools in Johnson, Brown, Jackson, Decatur and (interim director) Marion counties.

Prior to that, she was the Morgan County director of senior services in Martinsville.

On June 13, 2003, she was awarded with Indiana’s highest honor, the Sagamore of the Wabash award presented to her by Gov. Frank O’Bannon.

She served as a board member for Gleaners Food Bank in Indianapolis and various state boards dealing with human services. Mary was also instrumental in coordinating Hands Across America in 1986 for the state of Indiana and was also involved with the success of her family’s business in Morgantown.

She was also the chairman of the Annual Morgantown Memorial Day Parade for 20 years.

Mary grew up in the Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin and transferred her membership to the Morgantown United Methodist Church in 1975 where she remained an active member for over 42 years. Mary taught Sunday School for over 20 years, was a member of the Altruist Class, Missions Committee and served as the treasurer for the trustees.

Other memberships include the Morgantown Chapter of Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority, Franklin College and the Tri Delta Alumni associations.

On June 29, 1966, Mary married her high school sweetheart William J. “Bill” Meredith in Franklin. He survives. Recently, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their vowels in the church they were married in with their family and lifelong friends standing by their side.

Together they enjoyed wintering in Florida, traveling and spending time with their grandchildren. They also enjoyed working in their yard, tending to their flower and vegetable gardens.

They have been loyal season ticket holders to the Indianapolis Colts since 1984 and the Indiana Pacers for the past 15 years.

Mary was very proud of her two sons Rob (wife, Annette) Meredith of Belleville, Illinois and Jamie (wife, Angela) Meredith for their accomplishments with education, careers and for becoming parents of their own.

She loved being a grandmother to Brad Meredith of Portland, Oregon, Tyler Meredith of Oxford, Michigan and Hunter and Gracee Meredith of Morgantown.

Mary enjoyed spoiling them when they were younger and watching her sons deal with them as they became teenagers.

She was a loving sister to Georgiann (husband, Wen) Wei of New Hartford, New York and a sister-in-law to David Browning of Indianapolis.

Mary loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children. She was so blessed to see Ann, Amy, Missy, Julie, Megan and JB grow up and become such successful adults. Mary was also survived by her family’s golden retriever, Bella.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Beth Browning.
