GREENSBORO, N.C. — A North Carolina man has been convicted of beating and burning a man to death after they met at a bar.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported a Guilford County jury returned the guilty verdict Monday afternoon against 29-year-old Garry Gupton.

Gupton was charged with killing 46-year-old Stephen White at a hotel in Greensboro in 2014.

Jurors had deliberated the case against Gupton for three days. They will return Nov. 6 to hear testimony on whether Gupton should die for the crime.

Gupton testified that he met White at a gay bar and the pair agreed to have sex at the hotel . Gupton said something happened during the sexual encounter and he hit, strangled and beat White before setting fire next to his unconscious body.
