ELIZABETH, N.J. — A corrections officer accused of assaulting an inmate last year has been indicted on aggravated assault and official misconduct charges.

The indictment against Lawrence Bethke was handed up by a Union County grand jury. The 39-year-old Roselle man faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted on both counts.

Authorities say the attack occurred in June 2016 at the Union County Jail in Elizabeth. They say a verbal dispute between Bethke and the inmate turned violent, but further details were not disclosed.

It wasn’t known Wednesday if Bethke has retained an attorney.
