Paul T. Shane, 77, of Columbus, Indiana, passed from this life at 6:42 a.m. Monday, October 30, 2017 at Columbus Regional Hospital.
Mr. Shane was born October 31, 1939, in Grant County, Indiana, the son of Teddy and Emma Ruth McCan Shane.
Mr. Shane was a U.S. Air Force Veteran rising to the rank of Airman First Class. He was honorably discharged May 29, 1961.
Mr. Shane retired from General Motors as a Plant Engineering Technician in 1997 after 36 years of service.
Mr. Shane was a 50-year member and a past Master of Grant Masonic Lodge No. 637 in Swayzee and a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 345 in Swayzee.
He was a member of the Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite and the Elks Lodge in Marion.
He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Columbus and was a former member of the Swayzee Christian Church.
Mr. Shane was a 50-year member of Lions International. He was a former member of the Swayzee Lions Club and was a current member of the Columbus Lions Club.
He had been the treasurer of the Cancer Control of the State Lions Club and held several offices of the State, District of 25F, and the local Lions Clubs. He went on ten eyeglass mission trips for the Lions Club and was a coordinator for eye screening in schools in four surrounding counties including Bartholomew County.
Mr. Shane had recently received Lion of the Year for the State of Indiana and received two Melvin Jones Awards and the Progressive W.P. Woods Awards.
Mr. Shane is survived by his wife of 58 years, Myrna L. Mitchell Shane, whom he married January 25, 1959; his children, Jeffrey (Kimberley) Shane of Columbus, Indiana, Carol (Curtis) Binnion of Columbus, Indiana, Bradley (Peggy) Shane of Columbia City, Indiana, and Melissa (Gary) Shelton of Greentown, Indiana; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl (Laura) Shane of Greentown, Indiana; a sister, Ellen (Rex) Geiger of Florida; sisters-in-law, RoseEllen Shane of Kokomo, Indiana, Barbara Mitchell of Fairmount, Indiana, and Mary Mitchell of Marion, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shane was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois Anna Shane; and his brother, Kenneth Shane.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Daniel Cash officiating.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.
A Lions Memorial Service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Thursday.
An additional funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service – Rybolt Chapel in Swayzee, Indiana with Dr. Daniel Cash officiating.
Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home in Swayzee.
Burial will be at Thrailkill Cemetery on State Road 13.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Cancer Control of Lions Club Indiana or First Baptist Church.
