Gayle J. Gatewood

WESTPORT

Gayle J. Gatewood, 82 of Westport, passed away at 10:13 p.m. on October 31, 2017 at Columbus Regional Hospital.

He was born on November 1, 1934 in Waddy, Kentucky, the son of Gilbert W. and Emma T. (Hutton) Gatewood.

He moved to Indiana in 1943 near the New Bethel community and later moved to Westport.

Mr. Gatewood graduated from North Vernon High School in 1952.

He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Decatur County Conservation Club, American Legion and South Decatur Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school superintendent. In 1976, he built the addition to the church.

Gayle was a skilled carpenter and built homes for 50 years. He also worked with Jim Hagerty pouring concrete.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.

He married Betty Layton on November 15, 1963 in Westport, and she survives.

Other survivors include his sons, Bryan S. Gatewood and Darian T. (Jennifer L.) Gatewood both of Westport; grandchildren, Claire, Lauren, Drew and Anna Gatewood; and sister, Doris (Joe) Osterman of Tampa, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Claude, Carroll, Morris, Doug, Floyd, Allen, Paul, Jack and Clem Gatewood, sisters, Wilma Jean Robertson, Marcelene McClintock and Ann Cramner.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport. Rev. Gary East will be officiating with burial to follow at the Westport Cemetery with military graveside rites. The family will receive visitors on Friday, November 3, 2017 from 4 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
