PORTLAND, Ore. — A captain of the Portland Spirit cruise ship has been suspended because of a close call with rowers last month.

Though no one was hurt, Portland Spirit president Dan Yates tells The Oregonian/OregonLive he took the action to make sure his captains know they must err on the side of caution.

The incident happened during a rowing race on the Willamette River south of downtown Portland.

Sgt. Brandon White of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office says the Portland Spirit technically had the right of way. He says the sheriff’s office hasn’t received any complaints about the encounter.
