BOSTON — A candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Elizabeth Warren has decided to drop his pursuit of the Republican nomination to launch an independent run.
Cambridge technology entrepreneur Shiva Ayyadurai says he’s dumping the party, citing what he called their betrayal of GOP voters and the people of Massachusetts.
Ayyadurai made the announcement Saturday at a campaign event in Marlborough.
Ayyadurai’s decision brings the number of Republicans seeking Warren’s seat to three: Beth Lindstrom, a Groton resident and one-time aide to ex-Gov. Mitt Romney; state Rep. Geoff Diehl of Whitman; and Republican business executive John Kingston of Winchester.
At the end of September, Warren, seeking re-election, had $12.8 million in her campaign account compared to $3 million for Kingston, $281,000 for Diehl, $74,000 for Ayyadurai and $42,576 for Lindstrom.
