EAST GREENWICH, R.I. — Officials in a Rhode Island town have postponed a vote to reinstate a town manager whose appointment was voided by a judge.

The East Greenwich Town Council canceled its Tuesday night meeting after residents filled the room and open government advocates criticized it. The council president says the room was at capacity.

A Superior Court judge ruled last week that the process of appointing Gayle Corrigan as town manager in June violated the state’s open meetings law.

The council’s agenda Tuesday included consideration of Corrigan’s appointment and ratification of all actions she has taken as town manager.

The open government coalition ACCESS/RI says the public wasn’t given proper notice that Corrigan’s decisions would be retroactively ratified and the council was “thumbing its nose at the public’s right to know.”
