Crusaders rally to claim victory

C.J. Reed sank a 3-pointer with 5 seconds remaining to finish off a comeback from a 10-point deficit with 2 minutes remaining and give Columbus Christian a 59-57 boys basketball win against Horizon Christian.

The Crusaders hit all four of their 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, when they outscored the Lions 22-6. Coach Kevin Roth employed a 1-3-1 three-quarter-court trap and ended up forcing 27 turnovers for the game.

“We learned a little bit from (Friday) night,” Roth said. “We finished the game tonight. Foul trouble took it’s toll (Friday) night, but tonight was a better-played game.”

Conner Emily led Columbus Christian (3-1) with a career-high 22 points. C.J. Reed added 13 points, and Taylor Hilliard had 11.

The Crusaders were coming off their first loss of the season, a 71-69 overtime setback against Community Christian on Friday. Josh Jones and Kyle Foster each scored 15 points for the Crusaders, while Emily added 12 and Reed had 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jets down Mohawks

WALDRON — Hauser picked up its first win of the season Friday night, a 59-37 Mid-Hoosier Conference victory at Waldron.

The Jets (1-2, 1-0) jumped out to a 32-16 halftime lead and cruised from there. They grabbed 22 offensive rebounds.

Taylor Henderson scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Tessa Sims had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Hauser. Lauryn Starnes and Sarah Tedder each added seven rebounds.

Columbus Christian falls

Columbus Christian endured its second consecutive loss to open the season Saturday, a 57-15 setback against Horizon Christian.

Grace Lorimor led the Crusaders (0-2) with seven points and had seven rebounds. Kayla Jones collected eight rebounds and nine steals.

Panthers top Pirates

GREENSBURG — Class 3A No. 5 Greensburg jumped out to a 34-15 halftime lead Saturday and went on to hand Jennings County a 69-38 loss.

Addyson Kent and Baylee Byford each scored 13 points to lead the Panthers (1-3).

Lancers take fourth

FRANKLIN — Edinburgh fell to Greenwood 70-41 Saturday in the third-place game of the Johnson County Tournament.

Annaliese Lollar led the Lancers (2-3) with 16 points. Destiney Ramey added 15.

On Friday, Edinburgh fell behind 42-5 at halftime in a 70-25 semifinal loss to Whiteland. Haven Link led the Lancers with eight points.

Cougars drop 2 games

GREENSBURG — North Decatur handed South Decatur its second loss in as many nights Saturday, a 62-39 setback.

The Cougars (1-5) were coming off an 83-24 loss to Greensburg on Friday. Sierra Lang had six points and seven rebounds, and Madison Owens scored six points.

Knights topple Eagles

BRAZIL — Brown County trailed by only two points at halftime Friday, but Northview pulled away in the second half for a 43-32 win.

Aubrey Hollander led the Eagles (3-2) with 11 points.

WRESTLING

Eagles go 4-1

BATESVILLE — Brown County opened the season with a 4-1 record in the Batesville Super Six. The Eagles lost to Knightstown 63-12 before beating Batesville 60-18, Southwestern 39-24, Scottsburg 54-18 and Shelbyville 48-31.

Bryce Denton (132 pounds) and Justin Burns (160) each went 5-0 for the day. David Tucker (120), Christian Fouts (170) and Matthew Duncan (285) all went 4-1.
