HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth has become the first college to partner with a program that connects volunteer travelers with a nationwide network of K-12 schools.
Heather Halstead created the nonprofit organization Reach the World after graduating from Dartmouth in 1997. It grew out of an around-the-world sailing trip she took with five other young educators during which they used satellite communication to share their adventures with schoolchildren.
Now, Dartmouth is partnering with the organization so students in the college’s Foreign Study Program can participate.
This semester, one of them is Debora Hyemin Han, who is in Edinburgh, Scotland. Second-graders at the Dothan Brook School in Hartford, Vermont, have been reading her blog posts and talking with her over Skype to learn about the country.
