Boater pulled from Flat Rock River from Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Shelby County Indiana Conservation Officers have identified the man pulled from Flat Rock River on Monday as Raymond Sanchez, 35, of Columbus.

Sanchez’s girlfriend notified Conservation Officer Dispatch at about 11:30 p.m. that Sanchez had gone out on the river earlier in the afternoon and had planned to float to Noblitt Park in Columbus, according to an Indiana Department of Natural Resources news release.

At about 1 p.m. Monday, witnesses saw a male in a Bass Tracker bantam boat go over the low head dam on Flat Rock River in the Vandalia/Geneva area. The man, later identified as Sanchez, was pulled from the water by the Shelby County Swift Water Rescue Team, the DNR said.

The girlfriend said Sanchez was not familiar with the river and had no idea there were low head dams along his proposed route, the DNR said.

Sanchez is in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, the DNR said.
