ANDERSON, S.C. — A man trying to dock his boat on a South Carolina lake has drowned after the boat drifted away.

Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown told local media outlets that 45-year-old Allan Garber of Townville died early Sunday.

McCown says first responders were called to Lake Hartwell early Sunday morning after a boat was seen with its lights operating on the water.

The deputy coroner said Garber had returned from Party island on Lake Harwell. McCown said high winds caused the boat to drift away and Garber went in the water after the craft.

His body was found around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in about 10 feet (3 meters) of water near the dock. McCown said alcohol and the 50-degree (10-Celsius) water temperature contributed to Garber’s death.
