COVINA, Calif. — Police say officers shot and killed a man who had barricaded himself in a car for hours after taking his 7-month-old daughter hostage in a Los Angeles suburb.

KABC reports that an officer noticed the car blocking the park entrance Sunday in Covina. Authorities say the officer saw the man arguing with his girlfriend and threatening her with a knife.

The woman took the keys and got out of the car.

Covina police identified the suspect as a 22-year-old resident and said he made threats to hurt himself, but not his daughter.

After seven hours of negotiation, SWAT officers used a flash-bang device and the suspect got out of the car. Authorities were able to get the baby safely away from the car before the suspect was shot.

He died at the scene.
