Larry D. Johnson, 70, of Taylor Road, died November 26, 2017, at Franciscan Health Indianapolis.

Larry was born September 10, 1947, in Pineville, Kentucky, the son of Belvin Robert and Gladys Marie Sumpter Johnson.

He married Phyllis Ann Wilcox April 27, 1981.

Larry enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 18 and was sent to basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. He was then ordered to Amarillo (Texas) Air Force Base be an administrative specialist.

He received a permanent change of station in February of 1966 and was assigned to Pforzheim Air Station in Germany, where he worked as a clerk. He then joined the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem (Germany) Air Force Base where he completed proficiency training and testing on the flight line.

The unit was re-assigned to Holliman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, New Mexico, in March of 1969, where Larry worked on the flight line before being discharged from the Air Force in August of 1969 as a Sergeant.

He then enlisted in the Navy in October and was assigned to the USS Calcaterra DER-390 as a Seaman stationed out of Key West.

Larry was discharged from the Navy in October 1971 as an Yeoman 3rd Class.

Larry earned an associate’s degree from Indiana University and retired from Cummins Engine Co. after 30 years of service in 2005.

He attended First Church of the Nazarene and was a member of St. John’s Masonic Lodge No. 20F&AM, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis, York Rite and Murat Shrine.

The funeral will be conducted at 11a.m. Friday, December 1, 2017, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Rogers officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service Friday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; brothers, Terry R. (Holly) Johnson and Michael A. (Karen) Johnson, both of Cincinnati, a sister, Sharon F. Johnson of Cincinnati; niece, Tara (Ian) Zellner of Cincinnati, nephews, Justin (Charissa) Johnson, Jason Johnson, Terry A. Johnson and Jerry R. Johnson, all of Cincinnati; great-nephews, Drew Moran and Robbie Nunn, both of Cincinnati, and a great-niece, Clara Zellner of Cincinnati.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dennis R. Johnson and Gary C. Johnson.
