Tree clearing first step in bridge replacement

Tree removal near the Louisville & Indiana Railroad bridge over the Flat Rock River in Noblitt Park has begun in preparation for replacement of the bridge.

Columbus officials said the work is expected to continue over several weeks as numerous trees are removed to allow room for cranes and equipment to move into the area for construction of the railroad bridge.

Residents near the area may see temporary railroad stakes in the area of the bridge about 45 feet away from the tracks. City officials are asking that motorists and pedestrians obey the marked barricades and warning signs.

Construction of the $12 million railroad bridge is expected to begin in March, city officials said.
