Off-duty deputy apprehends fleeing suspect

An off-duty Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputy apprehended a local resident who fled the courthouse after being sentenced.

Sheriff’s deputies reported that Benjamin Yaryan, 28, 1299 N. County Road 600W, ran from the courthouse at 3:45 p.m. Monday after being sentenced.

Deputy Jon Lanning, who was off-duty and visiting the Bartholomew County Public Library, stepped outside when he saw a male matching Yaryan’s description running north on Franklin Street, deputies said.

Yaryan turned toward the library and slowed to a walk when he saw Lanning, deputies said. Lanning stopped Yaryan until police officers searching for him arrived.

Yaryan was then returned to custody and taken to the Bartholomew County Jail where he is being held without bond, deputies said. Yaryan told deputies he ran from the courthouse after receiving a six-month sentence for violating his probation.
