Runaway teen found riding exterior catwalk on semi traveling north on I-65

Indiana State Police said they found a 17-year-old Ohio teen riding on the exterior catwalk of a commercial motor vehicle on Interstate 65 heading northbound near Seymour.

The teen, who had been reported as a runaway from Shelby, Ohio, was arrested Tuesday at about 9 a.m. and taken to the Jackson County Juvenile Detention in Brownstown, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police spokesman.

The incident began when Motor Carrier Inspector Michael Buckley was operating the I-65 scalehouse just north of Seymour, Wheeles said.

Buckley saw the teen riding on the catwalk of the semi between the cab and the trailer, Wheeles said. Buckley got the driver to stop at the weigh station where Indiana State troopers were asked to assist.

Initially, the juvenile attempted to hide from the troopers, Wheeles said, but he was eventually caught by Trooper Seth Davidson. Further investigation determined that the boy may have climbed aboard the commercial motor vehicle somewhere in Kentucky prior to daylight, Wheeles said.

The driver of the vehicle was unaware of the boy riding on his truck and will not face any charges.
