Runaway found riding catwalk of semitrailer

A 17-year-old runaway from Shelby, Ohio, was arrested Tuesday morning after a motor carrier inspector found him riding on the exterior catwalk of a truck north of Seymour.

Police believe the boy might have climbed aboard the semitrailer somewhere in Kentucky before daylight Tuesday, according to a report from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.

Wheeles, the public information officer for the Indiana State Police Versailles Post, said the youth was discovered when Motor Carrier Inspector Michael Buckley saw him on the northbound truck at about 9 a.m.

Buckley, who was operating the newly opened scale house about a mile north of Seymour, had the driver stop there. The scale house operations include remote cameras, including one south of the U.S. 50 exit at Seymour.

The juvenile initially tried to hide from troopers called to the scene to assist Buckley, but Trooper Seth Davidson eventually took him into custody.

Davidson was able to identify the youth, who was taken to the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center in Brownstown. He will then be transferred back to Shelby, which is located in the Mansfield area in northern Ohio.

Wheeles said the truck driver was not aware of the youth riding on his truck and will not face any criminal charges.
