Truck fire described as ‘suspicious’ by investigators

Columbus firefighters are considering a truck fire near a home in the 2100 block of Home Avenue to be “suspicious.”

The Columbus Fire Department was called to the truck fire at 8 p.m. Monday at 2140 Home Ave., where heavy flames filled the truck bed, said Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames beginning to enter the truck’s passenger area, although no one was inside. The older model Ford was parked about 10 feet from a residence, but close to another passenger vehicle, Wilson said. Overhead utility lines leading to the home were also damaged he said.

Vehicle owner Belinda Boston told investigators that the vehicle had not been driven recently because it was not insured. The bed of the truck had rubbish, carpet, cardboard boxes, a wooden end table and other combustible items, Wilson said. Firefighters are continuing an investigation into the fire’s cause and are asking anyone with information to call the department at 812-376-2679.
