East swimmers sweep conference foe New Albany

The Columbus East swim teams both came out victorious over Hoosier Hills Conference foe New Albany Saturday afternoon, with the boys winning 107-78 and the girls prevailing 96-86.

The girls team started off the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, with Lizzy Frazier, Marin Wieneke, Whitley Eicher and Jennifer Utterback swimming 1 minute, 58.79 seconds. Eicher would go on to win the 200 freestyle (2:08.79) and 100 freestyle (57.49).

“We were really working on our mindset and big swims by all of these girls,” East girls assistant coach Carrie Utterback said. “We like to have fun and keep it light. Just want to relax and swim fast, and we’re just progressing really well as the season comes down. We are right where we need to be.”

Other winners for the Olympians were Jennifer Utterback in the 50 freestyle (26.51), Cloie McDonald in diving (123.85) and Frazier in the 100 backstroke (1:09.20).

Evan Wieneke led the East boys with wins in the 200 freestyle (2:03.33) and the 500 freestyle (5:31.32).

“We had goals that we set up for this meet,” East boys coach David Fribley said. “Being in our pool the kids swam well because they have been working hard.”

Cody Miller won in diving for the Olympians (173.50), while the 200 freestyle relay team of Ryan Singer, Tanner Hatton, Griff McGaha and Wieneke placed first (1:41.43). Singer also won in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.38) and McGaha took the 50 freestyle (23.60).
