CAMDEN, N.J. — Cooper University Health System has filed a lawsuit to recover $15 million in escrow after it failed to acquire three Catholic hospitals in New Jersey.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the Camden-based system filed the lawsuit Monday after it decided against acquiring Lourdes Health System and St. Francis Medical Center from Trinity Health.
Cooper alleges that the interim president of Lourdes had asked the Bishop of Camden to stop the deal. A Lourdes spokeswoman denies that. A spokesman for the Diocese of Camden says while the Bishop was aware of the proposal, he did not intervene on behalf of either party.
In an email, a lawyer for Trinity says they do not believe that the reasons for Cooper’s termination of the deal were “well founded.”
