CRANSTON, R.I. — Cranston police say they shot at a driver after the man struck an officer and bystander with his car.
Police said 25-year-old Hazael DeLeon of Cranston was planning to make a delivery of the drug fentanyl Wednesday to a home on Bain Street.
When they tried to arrest him at about 9:30 a.m., police said DeLeon drove at them, then put his car in reverse, striking an unmarked cruiser. Police said DeLeon then struck a bystander and an officer who became partially trapped and was being dragged.
A second officer fired, hitting DeLeon who suffered non-life threatening injuries.
DeLeon was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is expected to be arraigned Wednesday evening on charges including delivery of a controlled substance, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest.
