KIRKLAND, Wash. — Authorities say a Kirkland police officer fatally shot a man reportedly armed with an assault rifle at the Emerson Apartments.

The Seattle Times reports that officers responded Tuesday afternoon to investigate a report of a disturbance.

Kirkland Police Lt. Rob Saloum says officers contacted the suspect, who was carrying an assault-style rifle.

Saloum says at least one of the officers fired at the man, who died at the scene.

Saloum says he did not yet know the nature of the disturbance or what happened when the officers made contact with the man that led them to kill him.

He did not know if the man fired at the officers. He said neither officer was injured.

No further information was immediately available.
