NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans police say a 15-year-old girl is in custody after she allegedly stabbed a 71-year-old man after he refused to give her money.

Police spokesman Aaron Looney says the incident happened about 3:05 p.m. Wednesday. Times-Picayune reports the teen was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery by cutting following a brief foot chase by police. It was unknown if she’s represented by an attorney.

Looney says the man who was stabbed told officers the girl asked him for money, but he refused. Then she “allegedly obtained a knife and began to stab the victim.” The preliminary police report describes the weapon as a kitchen knife.

The man was treated at an area hospital.
