Letter: Limiting voting rights shameful act

Leo Morris in his opinion column misunderstands why gerrymandering matters. Our democracy depends on the idea that people are created equal and that in electing the government they should all have an equal voice.

No voting system can ever achieve this ideal but gerrymandering, together with other deliberate attempts to distort the voting process, hits at this basic concept of equality. It is quite simply wrong.

All the discussion as to the difficulty of achieving competitive races is beside the point. If you believe in the government by the people all attempts to limit voting rights are shameful.
