County treasurer’s office accepting early payment for property taxes

The Bartholomew County Treasurer’s Office will accept early payments of property taxes that were accrued this year but are not due until next year.

The recently approved national tax reform bill legislation includes changes in the ability to deduct state and local taxes from federal returns, Treasurer Pia O’Connor said. With that, some financial advisors are encouraging their clients to pre-pay taxes in order to avoid a potential tax hit next year.

While the 2017 taxes, payable next year, aren’t yet calculated, people can pay estimated taxes, O’Connor said. She recommends that people pay what they paid this year. The treasurer’s office accepts cash or checks.

The treasurer’s office will be open Tuesday through Thursday of next week at 440 Third St. A drop box is also located across from the Crump Theater.

For questions, call the treasurer’s office at 812-379-1530. Office employees cannot provide tax advice, however.
