Fred O. Cooper

WESTPORT

Fred Oris Cooper, 96, of Westport, passed away at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, December 25, 2017, at his residence. He was born February 9, 1921, in Bartholomew County, the son of Walter S. and Ora Ethel (Updike) Cooper.

He graduated from Columbus High School in 1939 and had been a Decatur County resident since 1950. Fred was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed bird hunting and mowing. He was a member of the Waynesburg Christian Church and Hope Masonic Lodge # 150 F. & A.M.

He married Marjory Elizabeth Bokelman on April 21, 1940 in Merom, Indiana, and she survives. Other survivors include his daughters, Anna Marie Shipley of Plainfield and Pamela Kay (Max) Taylor of Marion; sons, Michael F. (Marilyn) Cooper and Randal Kent (Pamela) Cooper, both of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lela Quinn, Zelma Kelly, Isabelle Romine and Vivian Cooper; and a brother, Teford Cooper.

The funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, December 28, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Waynesburg Christian Church with the Rev. David Burnett officiating. Burial will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Waynesburg Christian Church.
