BROCTON, N.Y. — Authorities say a former correction officer at a western New York state prison facility has been charged with raping an inmate.

State police say 41-year-old James W. Beam Jr., of Silver Creek, was also charged Tuesday with several counts of official misconduct.

Trooper say Beam was charged after an investigation into an unlawful personal relationship with an inmate while working at Lakeview Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in Brocton, on Lake Erie in Chautauqua County.

Police say Beam was issued an appearance ticket at the direction of the county district attorney’s office. He’s scheduled to appear in Portland Town court next month.

It couldn’t be learned from authorities if Beam has a lawyer.

State prison officials say Beam, an 18-year veteran, resigned Tuesday.

The Lakeview facility confines both male and female inmates in separate minimum-security units.
