MERRILLVILLE, Ind. — Prosecutors have charged a 35-year-old man with murder, saying he opened fire inside a northwestern Indiana home, killing his girlfriend’s brother and mother.

Lake County prosecutors filed two murder charges Thursday against Robert Stewart of Merrillville for the fatal shootings of 27-year-old Ryan Halbe and 55-year-old Candy Halbe. The shootings happened Tuesday night during what police say was an argument over Stewart’s disciplining of his 7-year-old son at Candy Halbe’s home in Merrillville.

Police say Stewart fled after the shootings but was apprehended a short time later after being found hiding in a nearby shed. Stewart’s girlfriend and several other people were inside the home at the time, but no one else was injured.

Stewart was jailed and it wasn’t immediately clear whether he had an attorney.
